As we tried to figure out what Bill was talking about, it became clear that he was in fact determined to force us to leave for reasons we are still unaware of, as he began fabricating blatantly false accusations to that end. He repeated that we were trespassing and denied that we had reservations for two more nights (even though we had received email confirmation in advance and paid for them), he claimed that my husband had smoked in the parking lot again and in the room (which he had not, and there was no odor, butts, or other reason to suggest we had), that we were refusing to leave his property (while we were quickly packing our bags and loading our car), and that my husband was threatening him (which he was not). He even followed my husband as he was loading our luggage into the car and asked him if he wanted to “spend the night in jail.” When I asked for a receipt to show that we were not being charged for the two additional nights we had originally reserved, Bill told us that he had called the police. We drove away at 8:30 at night to try to find new accommodations, with me six months pregnant and in tears, and both of us hurt and completely dumbfounded and bewildered by this mistreatment.
Although we were not provided the requested receipt (or any apology), our credit card statement showed that we were thankfully provided a full refund.
We had a truly disturbing experience with Bill, one of the B&B owners, who treated us with such astounding disrespect that we left the Cape two days earlier than planned.
This really was a lovely B&B, but our egregious mistreatment by the owner will unfortunately be the most vivid memory we take from our truncated stay on Cape Cod. We will likely never choose to return to the Cape, and we spent the rest of our honeymoon trying our best to forget the experience.
We have spent days since our departure trying to guess why Bill would have acted that way towards us. As white, middle-class, well-educated teachers, we have no idea what bias was behind his irrational behavior, and the only reason we could imagine that he was prejudiced against us is because we didn't look how Bill wants his clientele to look: My husband has long hair, a beard, and a southern accent, and we were noticeably younger (in our mid-30s) and dressed more casually/athletically than the other guests we saw, who all appeared to be affluent, older, and conservatively dressed.
We do a lot of long road trips throughout the United States and Canada and more often than not end up staying at B and B's or small Inns. The Palmer House met and exceeded our expectations. The location is terrific ..... 3 or 4 blocks to the center of town, Inn Keepers with a wealth of knowledge and lots of suggestions, extremely spacious and comfortable accommodations, and super good breakfasts. We were even comped tickets to a music festival at the local museum complete with food and drink. This area of Cape Cod is deserving of three or four days and if you go, the Palmer House is the only place to stay. Five stars all day long!!!
Great place of the beaten path but still walking distance to everything. Very well kept with a lot of attention to detail. Amazing breakfast!
We and relatives have stayed at this wonderful B&B in Falmouth many times over the years. It's accommodating staff, great breakfast and prime location make it our first choice when visiting the area.
Nice and moist. The place was just very moist. And after that, more moist. It was just moist.
My husband had one brief interaction with Bill before we headed out for a full day at Martha's Vineyard: My husband was smoking a cigarette in the parking lot, and Bill asked him to put it out, which he promptly did. When we returned that evening, Bill was waiting for us in the parking lot and told us that we were trespassing because we did not have a reservation for the night. We were confused and thought there was some kind of misunderstanding since we had made a reservation for three nights.
We spent one night--the first of our honeymoon--at the inn and were impressed with how beautiful it was and with the thoughtful amenities, the personal touches, and the delicious breakfast. The front desk and waitstaff were friendly and helpful. We were initially thrilled with having chosen to stay there.
